Chico Rain
Across the street
The hills are singing gold in the heat
Bed sheets wave
Telling me that you’re on the plains
And the tar on North
It ambers ash and earth
As I wait for the Chico rain
Marbled clouds
Cut my shadow loose on the town
And miles away
Bruises smear and flash across her face
And you wash over me
In shades of strawberry
As I braced for the Chico rain
To take me back
To the days that spun so fast
Where the silvered trees
Spoke of nothing else
And I’m drinking gin
Just like we did back then
And I stagger off
To find you from within
And you’re with me now
Just falling down
You’re just raining down
Sideways and everywhere
Gutters sing
A plainsong that seeps through my veins
Bed sheets hang
Heavy like the clouds were on the plains
And you’re running down the street
But not away from me
As I stand there in the Chico rain
Drifting west
The sun sewed my shadow back on to me
Across the street
The gold hills flushed a dusty green
And I wanted you to stay
But you’re four states away
So, I prayed for more Chico rain
Chico rain
Chico rain
