For Dear Life
The faucet drips, she stares through the wall
A flame licks at the side of a candle
She can’t sleep, she never can
Because her thoughts spin at sideways angles
She takes a breath and goes on under
Her eyes are open, her hair all trailing
She hears things she’s never heard
Answered prayers, the angels singing
And she holds on
For dear life
For dear life
Through the surface, she sees my face
I’m not there but she wants me to be
I’m just one of a thousand shapes
That form in the mist to touch her feet
She closes her eyes so hard they flash
And prays in tongues that I’d disappear
And when I’m gone she begs him again
To tell her why she’s really here
But all she hears
Are the angels singing
And the neighbors laughing upstairs
Through the walls
So, she holds on
For dear life
For dear life
She comes up for a breath of air
It’s just her and the candle glow
Just outside a shipwreck’s waiting
And she stares off as the light inside her grows
