The North Side of My Heart

Through deep dark timber and jaded sight
I fight and push my need for love aside
As a hush of snow salts my eider down coat
I could feel the fingers of the creeping cold

On the north side of my heart

The ravens warned me that you were there
So, I killed the fire because I was scared
And the bear-like beast inside me tried to flee
But I’m the master of all the feral things

On the north side of my heart

I spooked a herd of elk while cutting the knee-deep snow
Because I was foxing a sound that hung like peated smoke
I found a brunette girl picking wild roses and hips
She had feathers in her braids and a hymn on her lips
And loveless tears froze in my homeless beard
As she sang that man shouldn’t walk alone

A generation has spread their root and seed
Since the last time that I tried to speak
So I walked away thawing like a mountain lake
Later finding a willow twig-tied rose bouquet

On the north side of my heart

Her homeward tracks were starting to feather out
So I grabbed the roses and followed her south
